Passionate, compelling, thought provoking. These are simply a few words to describe John Keats’ sonnet, “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer.” This poem refers to how the readings of Homer affected Keats in ways many could not believe were possible. How can such a short poem be so detailed and significant? Imagery is used to portray the exploration and discovery that affected Keats so greatly. He wanted his audience to have a broader perspective and better understanding of life through the wisdom passed on from literature over many generations. The nature of imagery in this poem can be obtained through the mental images created, the figures of speech used, and Keats’ desire to share his emotions with his readers. By creating mental images in the reader’s mind, imagery can externalize thought and create atmosphere. For example, “Yet did I never breathe its pure serene (line 7).” Here, Keats is capable of making the bright clear sky a part of him and the line helps create a clear image for the reader to experience such tranquility and beauty.
