Structures of the Mind “Freud didn't exactly invent the idea of the structures of the mind, but he certainly was responsible for making it popular.”(PT) The ego is what you are aware of at any particular moment, your present perceptions, memories, thoughts, fantasies, feelings, etc. What works closely with the conscious mind is what Freud called the superego, anything that can easily be made conscious; the memories you are not at the moment thinking about but can readily bring to mind. The id includes all the things that are not easily available to awareness, as well as many things that have their origins there, such as our drives or instincts, and things such as the memories and emotions associated with trauma. Now nobody has a problem with these three layers of mind. But Freud divided the mind into two types of models, the topographical and the structural models. Many controversies have come up since Freud’s first theories. He has been an “interesting” person when it comes to his ideas.
