Megans Law Shifts the Burden of Punishment and Shame to Communities Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Megans Laws are laws that require sex offenders to register and that the community be notified when sex offenders move nearby. The Article, Community Notification Laws My Be Ineffective, makes the argument that most child abuse is not committed by strangers and that these laws unnecessarily raise fears and suspicions in communities. This is countered by the article, Community Notification Laws Protect Children from Child Molesters by, Dan Lungren. Lungren notes dramatic results as witnessed by the state of California and claims they do make a difference. Upon careful analysis it quickly becomes apparent that Lungrens article is narrow in scope and may well be biased due to his former position as the Attorney General of California. The article, Community Notification Laws May Be Ineffective, by Joshua Wolf Shenk, has more data to back up the authors argument as well as a global perspective on the subject.
