Marcus Aurelius: Philosopher King Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Plato's Republic, Plato discusses at length the concept of a perfect state. This state, a cognizant reconstruction of the soul as Plato saw it, is in perfect balance and dedicated to a certain philosophical ideal. The ruler of this perfect state must be near perfect himself, skilled in war, mathematics, logic and philosophy. While maintaining this amazing standard of human excellence he must also be virtuous at all times and live within a strict code of behavior were in his life is dedicated to the well being of the state. I cannot say that I know of a society that could meet this nigh impossible standard, nor any ruler that could be what Plato called the Philosopher King, but if we have ever gotten close it was in the personage of Marcus Aurelius, a late emperor of Rome and an amazing man. Marcus Aurelius ruled as emperor of Rome from 161-180 A.D. His life was one of contemplation and education, though also being trained in the art of war and conquest. He was known to have been a just and prudent ruler who was beloved by his people not for bloodsport or games......
