Throughout Hamlet, King Hamlet was portrayed as a great leader. In describing his father in this way Hamlet says ¡°See what a grace was seated on his brow (Act 3 Sc 4).¡± All great leaders need to have grace to be able to rule fully. Leaders need to be able to act with a certain swagger to put the people at ease, where they can feel like they are safe in their hands. Macbeth clearly does not possess this grace. Macbeth has his first chance to prove himself as a good leader when the banquet is called. Instead of putting his followers at rest and proving himself, Macbeth goes on to completely ruin everyone¡¯s image of him as leader at all. He sees the ghost of Banquo and begins shouting, ¡°Avaunt! And quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold; Thou hast no speculation in those eyes which thou dost glare with (Act 3 Sc 4).¡± All of the other men attending the banquet think that Macbeth has gone crazy and they do not look upon him as king anymore.
