The book ¡°The Scarlet Letter¡± is a fictional story that takes place in a Puritan colony in Massachusetts. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses the technique of symbolism heavily in the novel. A symbol, in literature, is an object or person that represents a feeling or concept the author wants to convey. The author uses many people and objects to convey thoughts and feelings, through symbolism, to the reader in the novel. In this essay I will discuss the symbolism in the rosebush, Pearl, the scaffold, the scarlet letter, the meteor, the brook, and the different townspeople.
In the beginning of the book, Hawthorn mentions a rosebush that is located next to the prison Hester is being held in. The rose bush, with its colorful and cheerful appearance, is in great contrast with the dark and gloomy prison that it is growing next to. The bush symbolizes hope in the book. I gives the idea that no matter what man does there will always be some hope left in the world, even in the darkest of places.
