Anne Dudley Bradstreet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Anne Dudley Bradstreet, one of the best known early North American Puritan poets, wrote about some of the tragic losses of life experienced by her family in several elegies. Even as a Puritan with a directive of self-subordination to God and Puritan ideas of the afterlife, Bradstreet in all these elegies seems to question God’s plans. The main ways Bradstreet does this is by suggesting that the lives of her grandchildren and daughter in-law were cut needlessly short and by questioning God’s judgment for doing so. This religious doubt becomes apparent by looking at her delivery of the elegies and the anger, humor, and irony that she expresses in them and then seeing that usually at the end she gives praise to God’s judgment or the peace to be had in heaven in a form of retraction of her angry message. Perhaps, these retractions are an attempt to find comfort in her Puritan beliefs, a comfort that clearly gets harder for Bradstreet to find in the later elegies.
