Title IX- Evil or Equalizer? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The 1960’s and 1970’s were times of rapid change with most of the focus on equality and civil rights. Although the most notable change concerning civil rights was the African American civil rights movement there was a rise in the popularity of the women’s rights movement as well. During the 60’s and 70’s women began campaigning for equality in all aspects of life which led to much legislation forcing gender equality. Title IX, an act passed by Congress in 1972, called for equality of federal funding and scholarships between genders in all government funded schools. While this is a great step forward for women’s sports and women in general, it has been affecting men’s sports in a negative way. Some people might even go as far as saying that Title IX discriminates against male athletes because of the gender quota that the Office of Civil Rights has come up with. Title IX was meant to end gender discrimination in schools, but gender discrimination is a complex problem that requires a complex solution.
