The Moon Is Down - Steinbeck Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Steinbeck was a reporter during World War II, and in 1942 Steinbeck wrote The Moon Is Down. The book was widely printed across Europe during WWII, and in some countries, such as Fascist Italy, owning a copy of the book was illegal and punishable by death. The book was translated into French, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, German, Italian, and Russian in order to spread Allied propaganda all over Europe, especially Nazi occupied Europe. The Moon Is Down is a dramatic novel with lots of conversation, and an inside look at what the invasion of a small town would be like. It was published in 1942 by the Viking Press with 188 pages; the current novel was published by Penguin Books in 1995 with 112 pages. The Moon Is Down is about the invasion of a small town in an unnamed country. It illustrates how hundreds of towns were taken over by enemy troops and in this case, forced to supply coal to enemy countries. This story takes place in the 1930-40’s, right in the middle of WWII.
