Even the smallest of major universities in the US has an athletic department. Beyond that, some have sprawling fields, enormous arenas and even larger fan bases. But where does it stop? Amateur athletics, by virtue, implies that the athletes themselves are playing the sport for no reason other than interest or love of the game, purely for enjoyment. If this is true, then why is it that so many young athletes today use collegiate athletics as a stepping-stone to their professional careers while every rule is bent for them? The Olympics, for all of the commercial advertising surrounding it, is a good example of a purely amateur event there is no payment for participation, no under-the-table deals, and every participant is partaking for the glory, honor, and fun.
Every year the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announces a list of schools that have been added to their probation list, as well as the occasional scandal that reaches national news and soils a universitys reputation for a few years.
