Alcoholics Anonymous as a Group
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a worldwide fellowship of men and women who
help each other to stay sober. Since they are all alcoholics themselves, they have a
special understanding of each other (Alcoholics Anonymous, 2001). Along with the
support of members who have gone through similar experiences with alcohol, the
programs primary goal is to abstain from drinking one day at a time while working
through a twelve step program to meet this criteria permanently. (Alcoholics

The AA meeting I visited was in a church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. There were
approximately fifty people present; members in the group were mostly middle aged. The
majority of the group consisted of caucasian males; there were very few females. As I
entered the church, most of the members were outside of the room talking and joking
with one another; nobody was an outsider. The atmosphere was very friendly and
receptive, this led to me to believe that this was a group built on positive
