In social work practice, the way one goes about conducting assessments, treatment planning and intervention can greatly affect the outcome and progress of the client. Two different schools of thought used by social workers are the medical model and the strengths perspective. The medical model stresses a focus on pathology, while the strengths perspective focuses on positive attributes of the client. There has been much debate whether one is more effective than the other.
A tool which is universally used in the diagnosing of mental illness is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). The DSM-IV-TR serves as a means of communication between professionals and insurance companies. However, to many social workers, the DSM seems inimical to social works emphasis on strengths, family, community, and culture and to the person-in-environment perspective (McQualde, 1999). Depending on the degree to which the social worker relies on the DSM diagnosis for treatment will often affect the treatment planning and recovery plan put in place.
