As the 19th century was coming to an end, American society was changing in many ways as an effect of both the Civil War and the Reconstruction time period. After the North defeated the South in the civil war, the divided country needed to be put back together. President Andrew Jackson was brought into office with the task of reuniting the former enemies. These events had a great impact on the country not just socially, but politically and economically too. Segregation, the system of laws and customs separating black and whites that whites used to control blacks after slavery was abolished, was the biggest challenge in the Civil Rights Movement. During the civil rights movement, many blacks and civil rights organizations challenged segregation and discrimination with a variety of activities, including protest marches, boycotts, and refusal to abide by segregation laws.
