Plato was the first to separate the idea of a mind and a body. In the Phaedo Plato was trying to answer that does a person have a soul and a body but also that the soul is immortal, Then, Crebes, beyond question, the soul is immortal and imperishable, and our souls will truly exist in another world. By making this distinction Plato was the first of many to believe that there is a difference between a mind and a body, whether he was right on immortality that can be debated, but clearly he shows there is a difference between mind and body.
In Descartes Meditations, he ponders the idea that nothing exists but his own mind. The idea is that nothing is physical, and everything is just a figment of his imagination. Descartes eventually concludes that not everything is part of his mind but physical objects actually do exist. So now that Descartes concludes that there is a separation between the physical and mental, dualism was born. The question became what is the relation of the mind and the body?
