“A Sudden Twist of Fate” Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1872, Paul Laurence Dunbar entered the world as the son of two former slaves. At the tender age of six, Dunbar eagerly began to write poetry. While considering this gift, which Dunbar discovered at an early age, one may infer that Dunbar chose to diligently engage in the cultivation of his craft. This is evident not only in the tremendous quantity of work produced by Dunbard during his truncated lifetime, but also in the quality of his writing. Paul Laurence Dunbar was destined to pave the way for African-American writers to receive critical acclaim on a national level. Unfortunately, Dunbar contracted M. Tuberculosis, a fatal disease, which modern medicine, yet to originate, was devoid of a cure. At the young age of thirty-three, the prolific writer’s evanescent health expired. However, while enduring through the metal frustration and physical anguish imposed by the disease, Dunbar relentlessly produced his fourth novel- a deeply moving and passionate tragedy- entitled, “The Sport of the Gods.” This novel immerses t......
