The Real George Orwell - A Hanging Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

George Orwell’s essay ‘A Hanging’ begins with a new day. What is usually presented as perfect and beautiful, the sunrise, is depicted in this essay as dark and gloomy, “A sickly light, like yellow tinfoil was slanting over the high walls of the jail yard” due to the events that are to take place at the dawning of that day. The first paragraph of the piece shows the reader the condemned men, the ones to be hanged. The paragraph depicts the condemned men’s living conditions, “…like small animal cages” which are shown as dark and gloomy as Orwell sees the beautiful sunrise. Orwell then introduces the prisoner to be hanged to the reader, “One prisoner had been brought out of his cell”, this line marks the beginning of the story as it introduces the key figure of this essay and the role that he plays. The prisoner doesn’t seem at all anxious or worried that he is about to be executed. Instead the essay depicts him more as unbelieving that this is his fate, “…he stood there quite unresisting, yielding his arms limply to the ropes, as though he hardly noticed what was happ......
