Hemingway - Hills Like White Elephants Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
To begin with, Hills Like White Elephants, is not you typical story that you would have found in the 19th century, it is a portrayal of the way Hemingway lived his life; creating situations, setting scenes and events leading to their consequences, while simultaneously leaving morals and conclusions to the reader.
To continue, as oppose to readers being guided through the story, the authors voice was never heard behind the story. This goes back to Hemingways style of writing using, simple and direct sentences to emphasize his point. Moreover, in the beginning of the story, we find two characters, a man and a woman, that are sitting at a table. We dont find out until later in the story that the girl even has a name and that it is Jig. Eventually we learn that they are in the cafe of a train station in Spain. Hemingway tells us nothing about them or about their past or about their future, we have to guess they are a young couple, he provides no information about their physical features as well. I think this is why dialogue plays a major role in this story......
