Robert Fulton was born November 14, 1765 in a little Britain Township in Pennsylvania. While he was growing up, his family had some financial issues. He had many jobs that helped with inventing the steamboat. For example, as a child he would spend much time with gunsmiths, and made mechanical drawings and painted signs for them (Goldenbergs, 854). By the early 1790s Fulton had started to work with canals and machines.
One of Fultons friends had introduced him to Joel Barlow who had made much money by running American ships through the British blockade and into French port......
