Autism
Autism is not a mental illness like most people think. It is a developmental disability thought to be caused by an anomaly in the brain. Ever since autism was first diagnosed in 1943, it has been on the rise. In the 1970s, autism affected one in five hundred children, but today it affects one in one hundred sixty-six children. In Florida, the number of autistic children increased by nearly six hundred percent in the last ten years. So what are the symptoms of this disorder? Why are so many children being diagnosed with it now, and is it curable?
More and more children are being diagnosed with this disorder today than in the past for two main reasons. The first reason is simply more kids have autism today than in the past. The other reason is children who were once labeled as mentally retarded are now being labeled as having autism. Children with autism have different symptoms from children who are mentally retarded.
