Deng Xiaoping or Teng Hsiao-p’ing was born in 1904 and died in 1997. He is known as both a Chinese revolutionary and great government leader. Deng Xiaoping became a member of the Chinese Communist party while he was studying in France from 1920-1925. As a veteran of the long march, he joined the Party Central Committee in 1945. He was later called to Beijing as deputy premier in 1952. His popularity and success helped him to rise rapidly, joining the Politburo Standing Committee in 1956. As a practical person, he worked with Liu Shaoqi after the Great Leap Forward to restore stability to the economy. During the Cultural Revolution he was marked as the “Number Two Capitalist Roader” second to Liu. Exiled he was sent to work in a tractor factory in 1966. Nonetheless, he was later reinstated by Zhou Enlai as deputy premier in 1973. He took over the administration when Zhou fell ill, eagerly implementing his “Four Modernizations.” In 1977 he became deputy premier, along with vice chairman of the party.
