Over the past century, the views on segregation in education have been reconstructed by many influences. These changing views have shaped the past, present and future of the American education system. The rise and fall of segregation has touched the world we live in. American citizens can be egocentric and often take for granted the quality of life in the United States. Minority children and adults have never taken freedom or education for granted given the struggles they have endured. The fight for desegregation was one of those many struggles that rightfully provided minorities with the opportunity for education. Therefore, desegregation can be considered one of the most important victories for higher education. The debates about segregation began back in the 1800’s. The Dred Scott decision in 1857, written by Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney of Maryland, ruled that black people could not be U.S. citizens and had "no rights which the white man was bound to respect" (Dobratz, Betty A.).
