An Exploration of Shakespeare’s Dramatic Use of Deception in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ Deception plays a large part in Shakespeare’s 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Deception is an act that deceives one’s perception of a certain situation. Shakespeare uses many different types of deception in the play, most of which are benign and used to enrich other character’s lives. However, harmful deception is used to shatter other people’s lives in the play and this deception is what most of the narrative hinges upon. Shakespeare also uses self-deception in the play which appeals to every member of the audience as everyone at some stage of their life denies something about themselves. Through use of deception and dramatic irony Shakespeare effectively involves an audience into the play. Self deception also emerges as an important dramatic feature in the play. Dogberry seems to exemplify the Shakespearean archetype of the self important and deluded fool. His desperate attempts to make himself appear, and perhaps feel, more grand, result in a barrage of malapropisms and misbegotten rhetor......
