A male college student with good health thought he should start eating healthier because of the well-known theory that college students turn heavier and degenerate their health during college years. He was also informed by student groups on campus about the anti-earth views of animal consumption and animal rights. The student was heavily influenced by animal rights activists and decided to go on a strict vegan diet where he would exclude all dairy and animal flesh products. According to John Vanderveen, director of the FDAs office of Plant and Dairy Foods and Beverages, "the more you restrict your diet, the more difficult it is to get the nutrients you need. After his first year of college and his vegan diet, his doctor found inadequate vitamin and mineral levels. Like many other vegans the student was deficient in vitamin B12, which lead to irreversible nerve deterioration. He also had a lack of vitamin D and calcium.
