April Gutierrez Dr. Bonario Art History 4.17.2007 Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh is known today as one of the greatest artists to have ever lived. However, during his lifetime, this was not the case. He led a short life, eventually experiencing fits of delirium, breakdowns, and self mutilation. He suffered from mental illnesses that were unable to have been exactly diagnosed given the time that he lived. On more that one occasion, he committed himself into a psychiatric hospital. His perception of the world and his highly unstable and emotional personality are major contributing factors to his art and they serve as the fundamental reasons for his unique style. What made Van Gogh different from other artists was the way he so vividly depicted scenes and channeled his feelings and emotions through his work. When looking at his work, we are looking at the world through his eyes. In simple objects, such as chairs, or common places, such as bars, he illustrates his almost overbearing passion for the symbolism in these places and things.
