In this modern age and time, vehicles known as cars are slowly but surely becoming an integral part of our lives. The Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines a car as “a road vehicle with an engine, four wheels, and seats for a small number of people”. The whole revolution of cars as an affordable means of travel was started by Henry Ford’s model T in 1908 (Ford Motor Company [FMC], 2007). Within 19 years, 15million Ford Model T’s were produced and the automobile industry has not looked back since (FMC, 2007). Are the benefits of having cars actually as high as we believe them to be? Over the past few years, cars have been increasingly exposed to bad media as a heavy contributor to a good many sources of air pollution (McTaggart, Findlay & Parkin, 2006). Stiglitz (1997) claims that cars not only pollute the air, but they also contribute to the ever worsening road congestions as well as the hotly debated topic of global warming.
