Eric Sun Mr. Krimer English 3345 11 March 2007 Children and Ritalin: A Difficult Choice A worried mother consults with a psychiatrist concerning her child’s classroom behavior. Her child daydreams, does not complete assignments, and has trouble keeping up with peers. The child has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Many parents are confronted with similar circumstances daily; they must deal with the difficult decision of whether or not to give Ritalin to their children. The issue of Ritalin use in children poses many points of debate, such as, is it safe, does it work, and is it over prescribed. For years Ritalin has been a godsend for children who were so hot-wired they were simply unreachable, and unteachable. In severe cases, the benefits of Ritalin on these children’s ability to function and learn and cope are so direct that advocates say withholding the pills is a form of neglect (Gibbs 86).
