Condemned in Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd”, Melville gives the reader a sense that Captain Vere is free from guilt and he did what was necessary to do. However as Melville portrays Captain Vere’s feelings about the situation the reader is overwhelmed and deems that Vere is actually guilty of Billy Budd’s death and condemns him for it.
Many times in life today instead of confronting somebody about something that’s bothering you, you stare at them with contempt and there is usually just silence. When Billy Budd was on the verge of getting his sentence he took a quick glance at Vere and no words were spoken, “Upon this young sailor turned another quick glance toward Captain Vere; then, as taking a hint from that aspect, a hint conforming his own instinct that silence was now best”(359). Although Melville did not describe this “glance” it is evident that he portrays this stare as a heated stare to show Billy Budd’s hostility towards Captain Vere.
