In the short story “ The Rocking Horse Winner”, the author, D.H Lawrence cultivates a theme, which conveys the hunger for money and social status is a destructive obsession. Through the use of characterization, Lawrence demonstrates this conflict between Paul’s relationships amongst his parents and himself. The symbolism and irony enhances the theme by Paul’s wooden rocking horse and the taunting whispers in the house. The unresolved conflict amongst the characters and himself eventually leads Paul to his fateful death. “The Rocking Horse Winner,” is about a young boy who desperately yearns to be loved and accepted by his mother. Paul tries to win his mothers love by gambling for money. He tries telling him mother that he is lucky, however, his mother answers sarcastically in disbelief. Consequently, Paul has a supernatural power: where he can communicate with his rocking horse to find out the winning horse in each of the races. His mother, Hester, believes that being lucky is the key to becoming rich, but her belief has an immense influence on Paul. When Paul starts winning......
