Romeo and Juliet coursework Discuss how Shakespeare engages and sustains the audience’s attention in act 1 scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare sets the scene as we know from the prologue that Romeo meets Juliet but we don’t know when. Romeo’s expectations prior to the party are for him to sit and hold the candlelight and think about Rosaline ‘I have a soul of lead’ this is Romeo saying that he can never love anyone again as Rosaline breaks his heart, even though he falls in love with Juliet during this scene. The word ‘lead’ implies that he has no feeling and his heart is black so he can’t love any other woman. This sustains our attention as the audience knows that Romeo falls in love in this scene and this juxtaposes what Romeo just quoted earlier on in the scene. Romeo thinks that Rosaline is the most beautiful girl and he will never get over her but Benvolio thinks different ‘I will make thee think thy swan a crow’ this is implies that Romeo is love with a ugly evil person (crow) and he will realise that after he sees all the swans at the party.
