The Iliad Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Iliad by Homer Translated by Robert Fagles Andy Bolton February 23, 2006 The Iliad is an epic attributed to being written by Homer. Homer wrote The Iliad as an outside source in a third person omniscient perspective. In a poetic manner, the author tells the story of conflicts between the armies of the Achaeans and the Trojans, Agamemnon and Achilles, and the numerous Greek gods. The epic reads as more of an exertion to heroic mortals, quarreling gods, and the innate human characteristics portrayed in the actions of both rather than a historical account of an event. The story spans for only a few weeks beginning nine years after the commencement of the Trojan War and ends before the battle is over; therefore, the author is obviously not trying to report the historical account of the Trojan War. Historians are unsure of whom Homer was exactly, but he is usually referred to as a blind Ionian poet living during the Greek Dark Ages in Ancient Greece (Brummet, 2003).
