The structure of family life in the Seven Little Australians and The Secret Garden is similar despite a disparity in the size of the families. The children in the Woolcot family and the Craven-Lennox family, are literally or figuratively motherless, and both families are headed by distant, often absent fathers.
The Victorian ideal of the child was that they should be good and do what they were told (Townsend 66). However, with little or no parental control and the ensuing lack of custody and guidance, the children in both stories are effectively left to their own devices and run free. Their freedom and independence determines the action in each of the stories; in The Secret Garden it is the awakening and rebirth of Mary and Colin, and in Seven Little Australians, a series of adventures and misadventures including the ultimate tragedy of Judys death.
