The American Dream in Black Literature The American Dream has been a popular subject when it comes to art, whether it is in the form of cinema, music, literature, ect. What the “dream” stands for is debatable, but it is the consensus that the American Dream is based on success. This image of success is the reason why so many people immigrate to America on a daily basis, as well as to why so many illegal aliens are willing to risk their lives to gain enter the U.S. Many minorities continue to fight for equal rights that would allow them a chance to achieve the dream that so many hold dear. The American dream is not that of a house with a white picket fence; however, in the book A Raisin in the Sun, a house represented the family’s quest of the American Dream. Langston Hughes speaks of this afore mentioned dream in his poems, Dream Variations and Harlem. The first poem talks about the difference between the pursuit of the dream when it comes to whites and blacks, while the latter discusses what happens when one fails to achieve their dream.
