The Beast From Within
What does it mean to be human? This question has been addressed by
many philosophers and writers. Octavia Butler in her short story, "Bloodchild,"
blurs the line between animality and humanity. She does this by placing animals,
in this case, insect-like creatures, at the top of the food chain. In this future world
on a faraway planet, animals subjugate humans. Through this inversion of the
balance of power, Butler tells her readers what it means to be human and what
can salvage humans from impending doom.
Butler's characters in "Bloodchild" and in other stories are independent,
stubborn and insistent on trying to control there own destinies. Butler creates
dystopias and landscapes that feature cruelty and violence. Her characters must
deal with unenviable situations and extreme adversity. It is through these trials
and tribulations that Butler expresses her views on humanity. For Butler,
