A readers understanding of the character of the narrator can position them to either collude with their actions and views, or reject them entirely. In the novel, The Collector by John Fowles, the narrative is told is first person by the unbalanced entomologist Clegg and by the diary entries of his captive Miranda. Deeper understanding of the character of Clegg and his values via his conversationalist style and disordered syntax can position us as a reader to collude with his views, and the way he treats Miranda or reject him.
Clegg in the first few pages of the novel seems quite normal, if a bit bland. Only once before she came to be my guest here, did I have the privilege to see her with it loose. He seems like a decent sort of person that is of course until we read further, Nothing nasty that was never until what Ill explain later. Its is then as a reader we begin to suspect that all is not well and begin to reject Cleggs views ever so slightly.
