Tender is the Night is one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last works. It was published in 1934. F. Scott Fitzgerald is considered as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century. The novel Tender is the Night was generally well received and has come to be regarded as one of Fitzgerald’s most important works. Despite this it was less popular at its publication than his previous novels and was considered as a commercial failure. More autobiographical than his other works, Tender Is the Night tells the story of an American psychologist Dick Diver and his wife, the wealthy but psychologically unstable Nicole. The story is primarily about human degradation, the disintegration of love and marriage, and the mental illness. Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night tells the story of a rich and beautiful pair (as it first may look) – the Divers. The major character Dick Diver is a representative of the middle-class American becoming rich, and again failing to settle in a society with definite class divisions.
