Women are the core of survival. In Things Fall Apart the society gives most of their power to the men. They run the farming and make decisions for the colony, but when the colony is in need they always turn to the women. Without them their society would be in shambles. Achebe brings out the significance of womanlike qualities by having characters such as Okonkwo foil the feminine characters to emphasize the importance of femininity.
Okonkwo is constantly trying to hide his feminine side from people to keep up the image of a powerful and masculine man. There are several examples where Achebe uses vivid imagery to let the reader inside Okonkwos head. Before killing Ikemefuna Achebe uses Okonkwos thoughts to show signs of femininity. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak (53). It is clear that Okonkwo does have feelings, which is a feminine trait for the Igbo.
