A growing body of research has attempted to understand what children know about death and how they acquire their knowledge of death. For the past sixty years, this area of interest has been growing and many researchers have devoted their time and resources to its study for many important reasons. How children develop an understanding of death is of great relevance to the area of suicide prevention, work with dying children, accident prevention, and grief counseling for children, as well as to the parents and teachers who regularly encounter childrens questions about death. It is also of interest to researchers to map the development of childrens thinking and identity building. Death poses the ultimate challenge in that it defines and restricts human life. (Kastenbaum & Costa, 1977). In this respect, Kastembaum and Costa suggest that the mastery of the concept of death is related to the mastery of the concept of life for children.
