PEOPLE POWER-FEMINISM IN AUSTRALIA
Feminist ideas played an increasingly significant role in Australian society from the period of 1960-1990.
Imagine yourself as an Australian woman in the years after the Second World War; denied basic rights, tied to domestic duties in the home, and discriminated against in the workplace. Then the 1960s came along with a sweeping change in thought that women should have a say in their government, that they should have the opportunity to pursue interests beyond their families without feeling guilty, and that they were entitled to a career and wages equal to men.
The women's liberation movement of the 1960s helped all these changes to come about. Its members organised themselves in groups and devised a series of radical feminist policies teamed with shock tactics, such as burning their bras in public, to get the publics attention.
