Guilt: a feeling of responsibility or remorse for some offense, crime, wrong, etc., whether real or imagined. More than that, however, guilt is inescapable, regardless of sanity or circumstance; it knows no class, condition, or justification, only perseverance. No one is able to escape its torture, not even in fiction. Edgar Allen Poe’s character, Montressor, came to find this in the story The Cask of Amontillado. In said story, Montressor sets out to immolate his foe Fortunado for wronging him, though the offenses of Fortunado are never revealed. Montressor encounters his foe thoroughly intoxicated at the carnival in the robes of a court jester and fools Fortunado into following him to his vaults where they are to imbibe the coveted amontillado promised by Montressor. Despite Montressor’s numerous “attempts” to sway Fortunado from following him, the two enter the vaults where Montressor entombs his foe, deep in the niche where he will remain unfound. Poe has a habit of disguising guilt in his stories, making it seem nonexistent, but in this tale, it is more than evident. The......
