Violence is a major issue in society today. It is seen throughout our daily lives in many forms, including but not limited to family violence, community violence, domestic violence, child and elder maltreatment, mass casualty incidents, and suicides. Many theories of violent behavior have been developed and elaborated from psychodynamic, social learning, cognitive, and family system perspectives. Previous studies espousing such positions, however, have given relatively meager consideration to a motivational analysis of violent behavior.
Meanwhile, the dramatic increase in the report of all manner of violent behaviors urgently raises the issue of psychological causality and the determinants of violence and begs for answers from the community of behavioral and social scientists. Moreover, the motivational analysis of violent conduct plays an important role in predicting the dangerousness of a potentially violent individual, a task faced with increasing regularity by most mental health professionals.
