Awakening Paper Relationships between people are profoundly complex, whether useful or not. In The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, there are many different, complicated relationships. Some of these represent power and its distribution, and some encompass personality. In order to fully understand Ednas motives, we must fist untangle the immense web of social hierarchy and conflict. There are relationships (men vs. men, women vs. women, women vs. men) within the story, which reveal the power infrastructure of Creole society and the conflicts between norms and revolution. Once we understand the relationships between the more central characters, we will better sympathize with Ednas revolutionary action. In the men vs. men category, one of the conflicting relationships of the book exists between Robert and Arobin. The existing relationship can be most simplified by saying that Robert evokes Ednas love and desire, while Arobin only represents a physical relationship.
