Dick Whittington Relating to Queer Theory
Dick Whittington and His Cat a seasonal pantomime written by Mark Ravenhill, it is also the first pantomime that the Barbican Theatre has ever shown. The following essay will critically analyse the pantomime, looking at the elements of queer theory that are evident within the show itself. It will investigate gender representation within the society we live in, and briefly question what is socially acceptable. A number of references will also be made to the theorists that have progressed the idea of queer theory, and will be applied to Dick Whittington and His Cat. Briefly looking at the gender issues within theatre history, and how these issues progressed to pantomime.
