City of Stone; the Hidden History of Jerusalem. By Meron Benvenisti. Berkley University of California Press, 1998. 283 pages. Tables. Index. $15.25 Paper. Meron Benvenisti has written an account of the history of the city of Jerusalem. Benvenisti’s book mostly focuses on the history of the city from the beginning of British rule of the region to the time of writing, while providing occasional highlights from the preceding five millennia where necessary for explanation or background. The author looks directly at the origins and outcomes of the inter-communal strife within the city and fighting over Jerusalem’s holy places by international and regional powers. Benvenisti’s thesis is that there are apparent and understandable causes for the “Jerusalem Problem.” One of these causes is the vastness of the disputable histories according to the various peoples of the city. As another cause, the author states the transformed land and cityscapes have led to arbitrariness over which ethnicity legitimately holds the right to rule the city.
