The American Dream: A Futile Effort in Mice and Men Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men, tells the story of two friends in California during the Great Depression who work as migrating farm hands in hopes of one day fulfilling their American Dream; living prosperously on their own farm. At their new job on the ranch the men are introduced to many other people who have been chasing after the American Dream as well. The American Dream often differs from person to person, many people have individual goals and aspirations in life, but ultimately it encompasses the pursuit of happiness through wealth and power. During the novel the interactions of the characters show that there are many obstacles in chasing the dream and that the American society has a cultural construction which categorizes people into being weaker than others, and this is why achieving the dream is such a competitive process. As a society we have adapted to the Darwinian idea of survival of the fittest, and many individuals get sucked into a struggle to prove that they are better than the next person.
