The Great War as a modern paradigm
In the Great War eight million people died because two persons, the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his Consort, had been shot. In the first chapter of the book The Great War and Modern Memory the author Paul Fussell immediately demonstrates his view of the Great War as ironic. By asserting that there seems to be one dominating form of modern understanding; that it is, essentially ironic, and that it originates largely in the application of mind and memory to the events of the Great War Fussell claims that the Great War led the path for people to think ironically, and this occurs because the events that happened were the foundation for the modern paradigm which is shaped by the unexpected and satirical episodes of WWI.
In general this war was ironic because none of the soldiers or people living at that time knew about war, and they acted upon their instincts to figure out a way of defending themselves; Fussell says there had been no war between the Great Powers since 1871.
