When the sociologist Mary Waters used the term "segmentary assimilation" she was reffering to the process by which a minority group gradually adopts to the customs and attitudes of the dominate culture, while still being able to relate to it's own. The process of assimilating into the United States society often involves learning English, adjusting to the culture, customs, trying to fit in, basically a whole new way of life.
I personally went through this process when my family moved to United States from Uzbekistan in 1999. It was really difficult to assimilate into the new culture. At first, the biggest problem seemed to be the language. English was always taught in Uzbek schools, even though most of the population spoke either Russian or Uzbek. I studied it for 8 years, but when I got here I realized that English they teach there is mostly used in UK and not US. Over here it's more like American language, considering all the slang.
