Water Imagery In Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet
Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet Is an insightful contrast, using a modern day time set and the old Shakespearean language. He uses many of Shakespeares original concepts, including the second meeting of Romeo and Juliet is set on a balcony, or that there first meeting is at a party.
The first time we see Juliet; she is immersed in a bath of water, shut out of from the surrounding world, her mother screaming for her frantically. This shows her inability to understand the outside world, shut off by her own innocence immersed in water. She is unable to understand that their relationship would be futile under the circumstances. The water represents purity and innocence, her own misunderstanding of the degree of violence between the Capulets and Montagues. She also appears to be floating in water, in a kind of dead like state. This greatly contrasts the first scene, when there is an excessive bustle and loud music. This shot greatly contrasts the bustling beforehand, her shouting mother, busy maid and loud music.
