PATHOPHYSIOLOGY of SCI T11 & T12 The pathophysiology of the spinal cord injury of SPO2 PATIENT H starts with one risk factor which is occupational hazard. He is an intelligence officer of the S.W.A.T. TEAM (Special Weapons and Tactics Team) of the W.P.D. (Western Police District) Narcotics Division. In one of their operations against the 14-K Gang, he was shot with .45 calibre pistol, the bullet entering his left lateral 7th intercostal plane and exiting the right lower abdomen. NECROSIS The spinal cord injury begins with a sudden, traumatic blow to the T10 and T11, by mechanical laceration. Neurons and axons at the injury site explode due to mechanical insult. Axons are cut off or damaged beyond repair, and neural cell membranes are broken. With necrosis, the cells bursts open pouring the contents of the cell into extracellular space. This is a problem because what is inside a cell is toxic to other cells. The contents of the necrotic cell may cause other cells to burst as well. This spreading wave of cell death, called secondary cell death, can result in much more......
