1984 and Symbolism: The Literary Essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Symbolism is very much apparent throughout the pages of 1984. Multiple symbols with multiple have multiple meanings that can be drawn upon to explain the way a character feels, or a certain aspect of the plot. George Orwell wrote 1984 as a political message to warn future generations about the dangers of totalitarian societies. He directly spreads this message through various themes, and in turn uses powerful symbols to give these themes added significance. Many small symbols throughout the novel had large importance to the main ideas, such as the diary or “Big Brother” himself. In 1984, Orwell writes with symbolism to help the reader better understand the life of Oceania at this time. The main three symbols which are the telescreens; the glass paperweight, and “the place where there is no darkness” are some of many symbols which help with the comprehension of totalitarian life, as Orwell predicted for the year 1984.
