A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines tells the story a young black man in his struggle to regain humanity after being labeled a hog by his lawyer. Jefferson lived in a small prejudiced community where he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death following a liquor store shootout. In attempt to transform Jefferson into a man before his death, Grant was persuaded by his aunt and Jeffersons godmother to visit Jefferson in his cell and impart his knowledge to Jefferson. After a lot of struggle, the two men become friends and successfully transformed Jefferson into not only a man, but a hero. Throughout this novel, Ernest J. Gaines explored the importance of doing the seemingly insignificant things, which ultimately have significant effects in the big picture.
